I got the call at 8 p.m. from my mother that my dad was going to the hospital in an ambulance. He just had another heart attack. This one didn't look good. My husband, Gordon, & I got quickly dressed & drove 30 minutes to pick up my mom to go to the hospital, which was another 30 minutes away.

When we got to my dad's hospital room, we were told that he was sedated and that his kidneys were shutting down so drugs were being used to avert this. This was extremely hard for me to watch since my father and I were very close. I knew relatively little regarding alternative health before that night. I did whatever I had learned. Obviously, what I knew was definitely not enough. I felt so totally powerless & helpless. There was nothing that I could do. My father died early the next morning.

"Nothing I could do" became my mantra. Mourning time. Later in the year, I started to gain a bit of weight and my hair was thinning but the worst symptom was that I couldn't get myself into gear until about noon. I was waking up tired & couldn't get anything done. I figured that something was up with my thyroid. Also, by that time I had found that my dad also had been on thyroxin for his thyroid. Did I inherit his thyroid issue? And why did it start acting up now?

I went to the family doctor who did blood tests & found that my TSH levels (thyroid stimulating hormone) were very high which means that my thyroid wasn't working optimally since thyroxin was not getting into my body. My first thought was swallowing a whole bottle of kelp pills at once in order to "kick start" my thyroid that somebody had suggested to me. PLEASE! Don't do this! In fact, I so much believed the hype that I actually went back & did it a second time! FYI – It didn't work. But why didn't the kelp work? Because the thyroxin that was being created by the thyroid was not being allowed to flow into the bloodstream due to swelling (I didn't know this part until later when I discovered German New Medicine).

I went back to the family doctor for more tests & it was found that the TSH levels were a tad better but not where they should be. I was sent to an endocrinologist who also did tests and he announced very proudly to me that I had low thyroid and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. My first question to him was what caused it? He didn't have an answer to that question. Then he said that I would be on thyroid medication for the rest of my life. I rejected this suggestion.

By this time I had done thorough research on the condition that was presented to me, which I did not own since I believed it was only residing temporarily within me. I asked him if Armour, derived from pig thyroids, could be used. He said that most endocrinologists don't use Armour because it is too hard to monitor. So, I thanked the doctor for his time & told him that I would be trying a different route to heal my thyroid. I would be back to see him in 3 months to check up on the condition that he presented me with.

I then went to my naturopathic doctor & he found that I had a number of issues, namely yeast in my blood and my blood cells were clumping. We used supplements to help support my thyroid to heal. As promised, I went back to the endocrinologist with new blood work done. Apparently, I was normal! Wow! I asked him if he would like to know what I had done & his answer was – "No". Another wow! As I walked out of his office he said that I would be back to see him. Well, that was back in 1997 & now it is 2025. Do you honestly think that it would be in my best interests to go back to see him?

With GNM, Hashimoto's thyroiditis and low thyroid hormone is about having no control over a situation (check), going into a dangerous situation, anxiety (check), panic attacks, "my hands are tied" (check), "nothing I can do about this situation" (check), powerlessness (check), something should urgently be done & nobody is doing anything about it. I trust you are getting the picture here about what truly causes Hashimoto's and low thyroid issues?

In the conflict active phase, the cells ulcerate in the efferent ducts & the thyroxin elevates, a slight discomfort of a pulling sensation or a mild ache in the thyroid and inflammation can occur. The symptoms begin in the healing phase. The ulcerations heal with swelling in the thyroid preventing normal thyroid secretions entering the bloodstream. The thyroid will be hypoactive until the end of the healing phase. Weight gain, goiter, cysts (papillary thyroid carcinomas) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis are all symptoms.

So, what exactly did I do? I supported my thyroid and allowed my psyche, brain & body to heal on its terms. I also kept learning about different branches of alternative health – Iridology, Reiki, Quantum Touch, The Emotion Code, The Body Code, +++. Then I discovered German New Medicine. This taught me to understand just how much that what I thought I knew, I didn't. I found out why people get sick or develop diseases. Then I learned how to help people to get through their crises since they usually don't have a clue what is going on.

I learned that there is no need to be in fear of what germs or microbes are flying around to get me. I learned how the different germ layers work within the body in regards to conflict active & healing phases since each are different. I learned that there is a lot of suffering happening in this world that is not needed that is being created unnecessarily in medicine. I learned how to take control of my body & my life. I learned that if I develop a sniffle or cold that I would figure out what just happened to lessen or stop the symptoms. I learned that pain can be shut off easily if the right "lock" is found and released.

How do we lose our power? Mostly, we lose power by going into fear mode. Why do we go into fear mode? Because we are told to! It is the belief that is ingrained in us that we are powerless and nothing we do will help the situation except to do what we are being told to do.

Have you lost your power? How does it feel? Not good. You can feel weak, listless, angry, shame, grief, etc. When a person goes into powerless/fear mode, this affects the body, mind, soul & spirit. Fear and powerlessness affect the thyroid, adrenals, lungs, eyes, etc. It really affects our outlook on life, our relationships with others and with ourselves. The only thing that is good about being powerless and in fear mode is that we can be easily controlled. Who do you feel is controlling you & why? These are the questions that we all need to ask ourselves.

How do you get your power back? By doing a lot of research. By investigating both sides of the issue. By being open minded about what you learning. It will be unsettling, but what is better - being in fear/powerlessness or knowing the truth?
